After a short meeting between actress and director, Betty Blue is engaged to be married to actor Jay Adler.
The new womanizer, Alan Roberts, starts messing around Betty's girl friend, and Jay wants to settle the score with him. But the young actors start drinking with Alan's girlfriend, and Jay goes home early. Once there, Jay finds Alan in a compromising position with Betty. Jay ends up pushing the young couple into a car, with Betty in the driver's seat and Alan in the passenger seat. The two begin their fight and Jay gets out of the car, while Betty accelerates, forcing Jay to jump in the way. The two end up in the middle of the road. Betty is unhurt, but Jay ends up in hospital, with a fractured leg.
Although Alan is spared from prison for Jay's actions, he continues to harass Jay to the point where he tries to kill him. One night, Alan has Alan tied up in his apartment, before taking pictures of him naked.
Jay, now desperate, contacts Alan's girlfriend, asking for Alan's help. Alan agrees to return to the apartment, but the police arrive in time to save Jay. Alan is arrested.
After leaving the hospital, Alan tries to be a part of Jay's life, as he hasn't forgiven him.
As Jay takes a trip around the world, Alan goes to the hospital to see him. Alan goes into the room where Jay is, but doesn't tell Jay that he has come to visit him. Alan comes to know that Jay is trying to commit suicide, and tells him that he will help him.
Jay visits Alan in jail and finds out about Alan's secret apartment, as well as the pictures he took of Alan's girlfriend. Alan tries to convince Jay that Alan was framed for something he didn't do, and that it was all a set up. Jay starts thinking that Alan is insane.
It's now been a year since Jay's car accident. The people around him have all begun to abandon him. He is broke and sleeping on the streets. At this point in time, Betty Blue has become very successful and becomes a part of the rich and famous world. In New York, Betty's modeling career takes off, and Alan is now her manager. Jay is still living on the streets.
